The history of the Family Society called JAPG Lda is closely linked to that of Quinta da Barreira and to the Enologist José Gaspar.
Quinta da Barreira, founded in 1853, has remained until the present day under the control of the same family since 1954.
The vineyards of Quinta da Barreira, planted and renovated in 2006.
Based on noble grape varieties, Touriga Nacional, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon and in the white Chardonnay, Verdelho, Alvarinho and Arinto are the base of the wines produced by JAPG Lda.
Quinta da Barreira, located in the Vitivinicola Region of Lisbon, is inserted in this very rich landscape set in the municipality of Torres Vedras. concept that is the basis of the success developed by JAPG Lda, is related to the rigor and criterion with which its wines are created and are based on three fundamental pillars: specialized human media, selected vineyards and adequate vinification technology.
Knowing that quality of wines is closely linked with the vineyards and vineyards that originate them, the selection of vine varieties planted in Quinta da Barreira was a decisive factor in the international success of them.
The professional experience involved is decisive in the final quality of the wine produced. On the other hand, also the concept developed over many years and related to the creation of unique and unique wines. Also with a price / quality relation very appealing to the final consumer, are the reasons that led our wines to take place in international markets like Canada, Brazil and China.
Graduate in Agronomic Engineering, by the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) in Lisbon, in the year 1974.
The professional activity, until 1987, was subdivided between the performance of teaching functions in the ISA and the technical and management activity in private companies.
As a lecturer in the chair of Viticulture and Ampelography at ISA, he started the activity in 1972, still a student of this school, as a monitor of the said Chair.
In 1976 he was invited to join the faculty of ISA, occupying the position of Assistant and Regent of the aforementioned chair. In these functions he carried out his Master’s degree and started his PhD thesis as a fellow from INIC.
He left university education in 1987 to devote himself fully to private activity.
In 1974, soon after finishing his degree, he started working in private business, in conjunction with teaching at ISA, as technician and manager of Raposeira Caves in Lamego.
In 1981 this company was acquired by the multinational Seagram, at the time the largest in the world and national level, assuming then all the responsibility of the management of the company, functions that maintained until 1986.
Within the same economic group, he was invited to Sandeman’s Production Director that same year and in 1987, when he left University Teaching, he was invited as Administrator of the entire production area of the Group in Portugal, integrating Maceira and Seagram Cork Department, functions he held until 1990.
In that same year he founded the company Quinta da Barreira Lda., With the production, consulting and technical assistance department, where the following functions are mentioned:
-Adega Cooperativa do Cadaval, responsible for oenology, functions that still occupy on the present date.
-Director General of Caves Velhas and Adegas Camilo Alves between 1991 and 1995
-Director General of Dom Teodósio Caves between 1996 and 2007.
– Initiated in 1996 its own wine project, through the acquisition of Quinta da Barreira, of family origin, project that is geared towards export and national market.
– President of CVR Tejo between 2007 and 2014.
– Diversification of the activity for the production of Artisanal Ice-creams through the acquisition in 2015 of Artisani’s participation in Lisbon.
– In 2018, in addition to Quinta da Barreira it develops another Trading company with its initials, JAPG
